St. Patrick’s Day Resources for Teachers

Don't forget, next Saturday is St. Patrick's Day! If you are planning on creating some fun lesson plans for students around this beloved holiday next week, note that St. Patrick's Day is much more than just leprechauns and pots of gold. St. Patrick's Day honors the patron saint of Ireland, Saint Patrick, and celebrates Irish traditions. Everything from history, art, and culture can all be addressed in various ways for students both young and old.

There are hundreds of websites and books devoted to engaging students in this fun holiday. Take a moment to review a few resources:
  • Teacher Vision has a huge database of resources for K-12 students. You'll find references about Ireland and the history of the holiday, free printable worksheets and activities, art projects–including building art with potatoes and creating leprechaun marionettes, literature activities, and much more.
  • Teachers First boasts a network of resources for younger students, including history fact sheets, vocabulary, and a book list for K-3 students.
  • The Lesson Plans Page offers a multitude of resources broken down by subject area. Everything is written and shared by current classroom teachers. One notable project involves history, art, and math for second graders.
  • St. Patrick's Day –the book! If you are an elementary school teacher, this book is probably already in your library. In addition to the story of Patrick's life, there is information about how St. Patrick's Day is celebrated with details of famous parades and legends about Patrick.
  • Enchanted Learning lists printable art projects and worksheets for grades K-6. One of the most popular activities includes a map of Ireland and allows students to trace the story of St. Patrick.
  • YouTube has some great videos and songs to share with young students, as well as some step-by-step guides to create various craft projects.
