Over the past decade, there’s been a growing awareness that the way we structure schools is shortchanging boys. When measures of accomplishment and punishment for boys and girls are put next to each other, boys consistently score lower, achieve less, and are disciplined more, despite the fact that they are no less intelligent. Even on supposedly objective measures like grades, boys may end up being judged unfairly. The question is what can schools and teachers do about it?

The summer months are filled with conferences, workshops, and fellowships that teachers can attend, but most of these require some planning ahead. Many of the most prestigious opportunities for teachers require an application process, and some may require travel or hotel stays.

5 STEM Toys for the Elementary Classroom

If we want to prepare students for the 21st century, we need to get them interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics), and while good lesson planning will play a part in giving them the knowledge that they need and igniting interest, perhaps more important is what students do in their own time. Play gives students a chance to explore and create without the limits of a formal lesson, and more closely mimics the type of experimenting done by scientists and engineers. To encourage STEM play, teachers should consider having these toys in their classroom.
