Teacher Home Visits: The Wave of the Future?
posted by: Garry | April 27, 2016, 03:14 pm

Teachers and administrators know it’s not just the time spent in the classroom that counts but the social and emotional learning that takes place at home and outside the classroom, too.

Referred to by many as “the missing link” in education, national education research overwhelmingly supports the finding that students do better academically and socially when parents and teachers work together and children show up at school ready to learn.

Senate Bill 469 & Teacher Freedom of Choice
posted by: Alix | March 31, 2016, 03:48 pm

Last week, the Kansas Senate passed SB 469, legislation designed to give teachers a voice in determining what bargaining group represents them during contract negotiations. The bill would direct the Kansas Department of Labor to hold elections for teachers to weigh in on their bargaining representative every three years. In these elections, the winning bargaining unit would be the group that won 50% plus 1 of those certified staff voting in the election. This is an important opportunity for teachers as 10 districts in Kansas have already taken an alternative route in changing their recognized bargaining unit since 2009. KANAAE testified in support of the bill earlier this month.

Friedrichs vs. CTA Will Ring in the New Year at the Supreme Court
posted by: Garry | November 25, 2015, 04:10 pm

In July the U.S Supreme Court decided that it would take up the Friedrichs vs. California Teachers Association case. The case challenges the union’s ability to collect dues from employees who may not wish to be a part of the union, or object to the use of their dues on issues which they fundamentally disagree with.

AAE became a Friend of the Court this past March. The issue of teacher freedom of choice is at the heartbeat of AAE’s founding and many AAE members have been instrumental in bringing this issue to light.. As of our last update on the case, provided by AAE member and fellow plaintiff Karan Cuen, we did not know when the case would be heard exactly.
